As the Celtics were eliminated from the 2019 National Basketball Association playoffs following a 116-91 defeat at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks, Irving went out swinging - but he did so without hitting anything.
The Bucks clinched a spot in the Eastern Conference finals with a 116-91 win over Boston in Game 5 on Wednesday at Fiserv Forum.
After sweeping Detroit in the first round, top-seeded Milwaukee struggled in Game 1 against Boston and lost 112-90 in one of its worst offensive performances of the season.
The Bucks take their biggest lead of the night into the fourth quarter and are 12 minutes away from their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 18 years. At times this season Rozier made his frustrations, as well as his hopes of becoming a starting point guard somewhere, quite clear.
The Kawhi Leonard-led Raptors lead 3-1 and will progress with a win in Thursday's game six in Philadelphia. On the next possession, Irving fired up a long-range brick.
After Wednesday's loss, Irving gave no real hints about his future. At the buzzer, Irving bounced onto the court and hugged several Bucks players, including Antetokounmpo.
As they have all series, the Bucks' bench players also provided an extra punch by outscoring Boston's back-ups by eight points.
The Bucks shot 42-for-94 (44.7%) from the field while holding the Celtics to 29-for-93 (31.2%) shooting for the game. They played hard. They did unbelievable things with their rotations.
It wasn't just Irving's fault. And as they look back on what has been such a confusing and disappointing season, they will try to find answers that they couldn't to solve their woes over the past seven months.
With Irving set to become an unrestricted free agent in the off-season, the conversation now shifts to whether he will return to the group who entered the season with title aspirations. But those words don't seem like a commitment anymore.
Irving, who won the 2016 championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers before joining the Celtics in 2017, added: "Truth be told, it's no time to be disappointed". "Obviously they are making moves to position themselves for this upcoming summer". Cowherd refers to players like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson Paul Pierce, Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, and Kevin Garnett who really took to the representation of the cities they play/played for and Kyrie just doesn't have that feel when it comes to Boston. As a child raised in West Orange, N.J., Irving grew up more of a Nets' fan. They were beaten by the better team and it looked like Boston had accepted their fate.
