Major General Hossein Salami, appointed head of the Guards last month, told parliament on Sunday the United States had started a psychological war in the region, the parliamentary spokesman said.
As a result of the USA tightening its sanctions, President Rouhani warned that Iran may face tougher conditions than those during the 1980s war with Iraq.
"We've seen this reporting", Pompeo said.
"At the height of America's political, economic and media war against the Iranian nation, an Iranian publication supplements the enemy's media operations inside the country", the hardline-led news agency Fars wrote in a comment.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday urged Iran's leaders to talk with him about giving up their nuclear program and said he could not rule out a military confrontation.
Iran has met its terms but Trump withdrew because he believes the accord did not curtail Tehran's ballistic missile programme or address Iranian involvement in Syria's civil war, something Europeans argue the 2015 deal was not created to do.
Under the accord, Iran had agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and allow in global inspectors in return for sanctions relief, a British media house reported. However, that projection preceded another move by the United States to tighten sanctions: the end to exemptions enjoyed by China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey, all five of which have been buying Iranian oil.
The commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Sunday that the United States "does not have the ability" to wage war against Iran. Iran has repeatedly threatened to retaliate to the U.S. measures by blocking the Strait of Hormuz - through which about a fifth of all oil consumed globally pass.
Washington also approved a new deployment of Patriot missiles to the Middle East, a U.S. official said.
In response to alleged threats from Iran, the USS Arlington, which transports marines, amphibious vehicles, conventional landing craft and rotary aircraft, and the Patriot air defence system will join the Abraham Lincoln carrier group, the Pentagon announced Friday.
He said that the USS Lincoln's new route to the Gulf was an example of "dynamic force employment" - a new Navy tactic that is meant to surprise potential adversaries by having U.S. ships show up off their coastlines without warning.
