If you're a NY sports fan who puts your support behind the Knicks and Jets, well, you've had better days. The Jets fired Mike Maccagnan just a few weeks removed from the NFL Draft. For what it's worth, Gase later downplayed the reports.
The team said it will start looking for a new general manager immediately, but head coach Adam Gase will assume interim duties until a hire is made.
Now serving as the Philadelphia Eagles VP of Player Personnel, Douglas has been with the Jets neighbors to the west since 2016, helping them to a Super Bowl chip a year later.
Gase, the former Bears offensive coordinator, was sacked as head coach of the Dolphins on December 31 after two seasons in Miami. "It kind of pisses me off a little bit".
Maccagnan had two years left on his contract.
But Maccagnan's draft history since coming to NY after 15 years in various scouting positions with the Houston Texans is otherwise shaky, at best.
Friction in the Jets' front office was reported in April.
Lee was drafted by the Jets in 2016 and has been one of the top tacklers on the team each season, including having the second-most tackles on the team in 2017. He has also been the subject of trade rumors.
The draft-day misses landed Maccagnan squarely on the hot seat, and now the Jets will move forward with someone else making the personnel decisions.
Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas could emerge as a candidate, Schefter suggested. Douglas and Gase have previous working experience: Douglas was Chicago's director of college scouting in 2015, when Gase was the Bears' offensive coordinator.
