It's a little cheaper than it was before, but it's also something you can't opt out of (except in the case of base-price Model 3). While still available for purchase, phone and in-person sales give Tesla sales reps an opportunity to up-sell buyers.
It's also worth noting that Tesla has scrapped building a separate version of the base trim Model 3. The Model 3 Standard Range is now a Standard Range Plus model with software disabling a number of features, including music streaming, navigation and heated seats.
Tesla said its customers in the United States would be able to lease any Model 3 variant for a small down payment and monthly payments thereafter, but they will not have the option to buy the vehicle at the end of the lease. Tesla downgrades the abilities of the Model 3 Standard version, limiting the miles it can travel on a single charge, blocking some autopilot features and preventing drivers from turning on the seat warmers. As a result, the price of the $37,500 Standard Plus Model 3 is going up to $39,500.
Tesla's $35,000 Model 3 is no longer available for order online.
Aspirants can choose any Model 3 variant and with annual mileage options of 10,000, 12,000, or 15,000 miles.
As for the $35,000 Model 3. Buyers can activate them (and essentially convert the auto into a Standard Plus Model 3) at any time. Tesla did add that customer who leave will not have the option to buy back their vehicles at the end of the term, because "with full autonomy coming in the future via an over-their-air software update, we plan to use those vehicles in the Tesla ride-hailing network", Tesla wrote.
In responding a follower on Twitter encouraged Tesla owners to buy a product that covers up a camera over the rear-view mirror of their cars, Musk, 47, confirmed for the first time that the objective of the camera was to record video when owners put their auto on the network. "We're making these changes to ensure that our online order process is focused exclusively on the three Model 3 variants customers want most", the company says in its post. According to Tesla's data, the Standard Plus outsold the $35,000 base vehicle by a ratio of 6:1.
In addition to that news, Autopilot was announced as standard across the Tesla lineup.
