Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blasted Donald Trump as a semi-illiterate fool on Monday, minutes after the president slammed her "Green New Deal" proposal as juvenile and poorly conceived.

Trump compared the Green New Deal is now at a campaign appearance in Texas El Paso with a "high-school-of-semester work to get a bad grade".

Markey and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY led the unveiling of a resolution laying the groundwork for aggressive policy proposals created to combat climate change, which critics argue could be too costly to the economy and in some cases outright not feasible. Her chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, tweeted that they had worked on the Green New Deal "in collaboration with a bunch of groups and offices over the course of the last month".

It also immediately provoked controversy.

The Green New Deal's agenda has been pushed for over a decade by the Green Party, but now gained attention from Democrats including Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley and political commentator Van Jones.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not explicitly endorse the Green New Deal, but welcomed "the enthusiasm" of its backers, AP reported. The Green New Deal also specifically targets Wall Street institutions that have used monetary support of the government through taxpayer dollars during economic crises.

Each of the five Democratic senators who have announced White House bids are already signed on as co-sponsors to the Senate version of the resolution, which Massachusetts Democratic Sen.

"To me, this is just so extreme", said John Barrasso of Wyoming.

One of the bullet points included "economic security for all who are unable or unwilling to work", a provision that conservatives pounced on to ridicule the proposal.
