Fairfax has denied both allegations and claim they are part of a smear campaign against him and he doesn't intend to resign.
The statement described the assault as "premeditated and aggressive", and noted that while Watson and Fairfax had been social friends, they were never involved romantically.
"He revealed that Ms. Watson was the victim of a prior rape", Nancy Erika Smith, Watson's attorney, wrote in the second statement. "She went to the Dean, who provided no help and discouraged her from pursuing the claim further", the Friday statementsaid.
Gov. Ralph Northam, who is also confronting controversy over a racist photo on his med school yearbook page and subsequent admission he once darkened his face, also appeared to support an investigation, but he also told "CBS This Morning" host Gayle King that if the accusations against Fairfax are true, "I don't think he's going to have any other option but to resign".
News of the resignations was first reported by the Richmond Times-Dispatch on Monday.
Smith also provided an email exchange between Watson and a friend from Duke, Milagros Joye Brown, in which she tells her friend not to include her on correspondence regarding Fairfax because he had raped her in college. "That was a name I knew because I'm a basketball fan". The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the New York Times have coverage.
This is not the first time Watson has accused someone of assault.
Watson also confided in a friend after seeing that Fairfax was running for office. You know, playing, obviously - and that is hugely important.
In his statement on Saturday, he acknowledges both interactions with the women but says both instances were consensual. "The university is looking into the matter and will have no further comment at this time".
Krzyzewski commented on the issue after the victory.
"Such an investigation will confirm my account because I am telling the truth", Fairfax said in a statement.
On Sunday night, Fairfax spoke via phone with the Post and said that he would not resign from the post of lieutenant governor. "We'll do whatever we can to answer whatever questions are posed to us". But it lost to UConn 77-74 in the national championship game that season, which was played at Tropicana Field.
Information from ESPN's Myron Medcalf was used in this report.
Maggette is now an analyst at Fox Sports.
Maggette retired from the National Basketball Association in 2013 and now works as an analyst for Fox Sports, which told the Times it was also "looking into the matter". Jennifer McClellan, the vice chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, which has called on Fairfax to step down.
Fairfax has denied the accusations.
Fairfax's policy director, Adele McClure, and scheduler, Julia Billingsly, both called it quits Monday, as did David Mills and Courtney McCargo, two employees of his We Rise Together political action committee, Fairfax's spokeswoman Lauren Burke said. "It is demonstrably false".
"I have never had any trousers like that", Northam said.
Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated that Watson was the second woman to accuse Fairfax of raping her, and it has been updated to reflect she was the second woman to accuse him of sexual assault.
