Black Panther may have become the first Marvel Studios movie to win Academy Awards - and done so without most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's usual troupe of actors - but Avengers actor Mark Ruffalo, who plays Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk in the franchise, is not feeling left out. Notably, Beachler became the first Black artist to ever win the award, and she was the first Black artist nominated in the category's 90-year existence. Hannah Beachler is also one of the first black person to get nominated for the award and was the first to win it.
Black Panther took home several awards, and in the process, made Oscar history on several fronts. "But through costume design, we turned him into an African king", said Carter, who drew inspiration for the film's stylish and colorful garments from her travels to Africa. Entertainment Weekly notes that Carter became the first black woman to win Best Costume Design. Thank you, Ryan. I love you.
After getting seven nominations, many Nigerians were hopeful that Sope Aluko will lay claim to an Oscar having featured as Shaman, a Wakandan spiritual leader who worked alongside Zuri (Forest Whitaker) in 'Black Panther'.
"I stand here stronger than I was yesterday", she told the ceremony. Thank you for honoring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen. Beacher also gave thanks to Marvel, who she said "lifted us up" every day during the process of making the film.
Thank you, Ryan Coogler. Göransson also scored Creed II, even though Coogler did not return to direct that film, opting instead to turn his attention to Black Panther.
Black excellence regined supreme during the 91st annual Academy Awards Sunday night. Despite Green Book being about an African American man who made history, the crew going up to accept the award on stage was predominantly white. Black Panther arguably exceeded most fans expectations by far, with it being one of the biggest films of 2018.
