But that's not quite what's happening in a video released by the New York Police Department.
Just before midnight on Friday in Times Square, a man proposed to the woman he hoped would become his wife.
The man then lies down on the road to peer in between the gaps of the grate.
Authorities took to Twitter Saturday afternoon with footage of a man who had dropped the engagement down a city grate. There is also a request along with the video -"help us find them". We're making arrangements to get them their ring back. A spokesperson declined to identify the couple or offer details about how the ring was found.
The New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square attract over a million visitors from the USA and around the world every year.
This proposal was more modest.
'Here's a photo of the ring our officers recovered (and cleaned!)' the tweet read.
"WANTED for dropping his fiancee's ring", the NYPD joked in a post on Twitter, which went on to appeal for information about the couple.
'Do your thing Twitter, ' O'Neill tweeted.
"I am licensed to practice as a Proposal Location Judge and I would rate this one as a two in regards to kneeling over a grate", another user said.
