While the rocket is the BFR, the spaceship itself is called the BFS or Big Falcon Spaceship. He will bring six to eight artists with him, he said.
HAWTHORNE, California - Elon Musk and his rocket company, SpaceX, have revealed who will fly their spaceship around the moon for the first time: a Japanese entrepreneur and billionaire named Yusaku Maezawa. Musk previously hinted the first person to go on this trip might be Japanese. Maezawa said during an announcement Monday evening. Once the artists return to the Earth, they will compose a work inspired by their experience. "Please don't say no!" The event will reveal the identity of the mystery passenger, and we hope, more details on the big freaking rocket. "He's ultimately paying for the average citizen to travel to other planets".
Earlier Maezawa was in the news when he bought a painting worth $110.5 million, by the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat while at an auction in NY.
"I love art and I look forward to seeing what different artists working together [can] bring to life", Maezawa added.
If all goes according to plan, Maezawa and his artist crew could become the first-ever private lunar tourists in history. But he's seeking to invite the best, including musicians, painters and film directors. He even has a catchy name for the project: #dearMoon. It's expected that the Falcon will attempt at a test flight to Mars in 2022 and a manned mission to Mars by 2024.
"I know that sounds insane, and we don't usually meet our time lines, but I wanted you to know at least order of magnitude, that's what we're thinking", Shotwell said. The Moon-bound spacecraft will consist of two parts: a 191-foot rocket booster and a 157-foot spaceship.
Maezawa didn't immediately say who will be on his guest list for the spaceflight, but in response to a question from a reporter he said he'd consider inviting Musk.
"This is going to be risky. This is no walk in the park", Musk cautioned. The third fin was needed because landing legs will come out of the fins. The ship was announced past year and was described as being 106 meters long, with 40 cabins to transport 100 people. SpaceX has bigger plans.
Musk estimated it would cost $5 billion to build.
The company is still developing the BFR rocket, which will power the mission.
Two high-level executives announced departures from Tesla, and the diver sued Musk on Monday.
Elon Musk and SpaceX have been doing some very cool things over the past decade with rockets.
"What is the most fun you can have in zero G?"
On top of all that, SpaceX said that the BFR will be 100 percent reusable, making the trip "economically feasible". It's envisioned as a base for exploration of the moon, Mars and beyond.
