Previous leaked set images and video footage showed off Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck exiting a building, arguing with a clown and then throwing the clown nose down the street.
Overall, this gives us an interesting look at the both the character and the film, which is definitely shaping up to be something interesting. Now let's all make wild comparisons with this morsel to the legendary Joker performance of Heath Ledger in "the Dark Knight". Jared Leto, who played the Clown Prince of Crime in Suicide Squad, is also getting his own movie alongside Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and he's also expected back for a Suicide Squad sequel. The stand alone Joker film is reported to be set in 1970's, telling the origin story of the mysterious and iconic Batman villain and is being filmed in New York City. So when director Todd Phillips released this screen test of Joaquin in the clown makeup, I was interested to see what it would look like. It arrives in theaters on October 4, 2019.
Phillips had previously shared a portrait of Phoenix in character, but crucially, without the Joker makeup. The corners of Arthur's mouth suddenly turn up into a disturbing smile, and just as quickly, Phoenix is seen in full Joker makeup. Todd Phillips' exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
