"He doesn't understand the power that he has for being the leader of this handsome country", James said.
"Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, [CNN anchor] Don Lemon", Trump tweeted. On Friday night Trump tweeted out that LeBron James was making CNN's Dom Lemon look smart which isn't easy to do.
It came after the LA Lakers star accused Mr Trump of being divisive in a CNN interview.
As was noted on Twitter Saturday morning, Lemon and James are two successful and respected African-American men who have risen in their respective careers.
On Monday, James sat down for an interview to promote a new public school that his charitable foundation helped build. James has always been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration, as well as a political activist and philanthropist. One of Trump's own employees has described Trump University as "a fraudulent scheme". Not one word or follow-up that takes issue with anything either man has actually said.
"There's a lot of insults the president could have hurled at LeBron and Don Lemon, but it says something that the president openly questioned their intelligence". He included a #BeBest hashtag, an apparent troll of Melania Trump's anti-bullying initiative Be Best - often used to ridicule Trump's attacks on social media.
He has repeatedly said that anyone who kneels during the anthem should be fired.
CNN's Lemon and Don Rather have since responded to the inflammatory remarks by Trump, Rather calling the president a disgrace and Lemon questioning who the "real dummy" is.
But Trump's election has charged James's outlook, along with other athletes and coaches.
Last year, Mr Trump rescinded an invitation for National Basketball Association champions Golden State Warriors to visit the White House after team captain Stephen Curry questioned the billionaire's presidency.
And of course, no cycle of Trump shade is complete without Pete Souza, the former White House photographer for President Barack Obama, weighing in with a deep cut from his archives.
Tension between the basketball star and president has built up for some time now.
That observation echoed Saturday. "Going to White House was a great honour until you showed up!"
These all speak louder than a President's Tweet. "I believe there's someone else out there". He responded, "I don't think so", until Lemon brought up Trump as a possible opponent.
"Sounds like @FLOTUS had the remote last night". "We hope you both saw the incredible work of [LeBron James]".
