Mauricio Pochettino ended last season seemingly hopeful of retaining the bulk of his squad but also keen to bring in some new box office players to light up the club's new stadium. And if they don't play then I don't want them to give up and start to say: 'The gaffer is a bad guy.' It's not a drama - drama is another thing.
"What the club is doing is showing it is so courageous", he offered. At a press conference hours before the transfer deadline the Argentinian all but confirmed there would be no signings, but declared himself happy with the situation and warned his players he expects them to feel the same way too. "Building a new training ground, finishing this summer the (player's) lodge was a massive investment".
"Building a stadium that is almost £1 billion". That is true, don't believe in £400m, that is the truth.
"For me [that] is to be courageous".
Tottenham did provide the most players to the World Cup semifinalists.
Pochettino added: "I am happy to keep all the squad together, there were many rumours during the summer about players out".
There are few arguments that Spurs have one of the best starting XI's in the Premier League, but the quality of the reinforcements at the North London outfit is nowhere the standard of their title rivals.
"Our decision was not to sign, [even though] it is the fashion to sign or because we are the only club in Europe that has not signed players".
Tottenham finished in third place in the Premier League table last season to ensure their continued participation in the Champions League at the expense of Chelsea FC and Arsenal. "It's a courageous decision".
"I am responsible for what I told you [in May] or what I tell you, but I can not be responsible for what you believe that I wanted to tell you", he said.
"We try to be competitive".
On how people interpreted his comments at the end of last season, Pochettino added: "I am responsible for what I told you or what I tell you but I can not be responsible for what you believe that I wanted to tell you". "That is the key this season".
