The scene outside the building was a somber one Wednesday morning as McCain's casket, draped in an American flag, was carried out of a hearse by six members of the Arizona Army National Guard.

McCain's casket will be at the center of the memorial service Wednesday, which would have been his 82nd birthday, with chairs set up on all sides and a lectern between the US and Arizonan flags.

Following a Thursday memorial at a Phoenix church, McCain's body will be flown to Washington where he will lie in state on Friday at the U.S. Capitol before a Saturday funeral at the Washington National Cathedral.
Last year, McCain threatened to force an Afghanistan strategy on the Pentagon after the administration delayed issuing its own new policy for months.
