Officials on Tuesday counted votes a day after millions of Zimbabweans peacefully cast their votes in a process closely watched by worldwide monitors, who have yet to announce whether the election was free and fair.

More than 5.5 million people were registered to vote and turnout was about 70 percent.

Chigumba said most of the 11 000 polling stations have now completed counting the votes and only the verification process is underway. If no presidential candidate wins more than 50 per cent of the vote, a run off will be held between the top two on September 8.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights warned of intimidation and threats of violence in the run-up to polling day, but said it was encouraged to see open rallies and peaceful demonstrations.

"While investors remain sceptical over whether Mugabe's former right-hand man has indeed turned over a new leaf, Mnangagwa's charm offensive with Western governments and businesses has at least given him a credible lifeline at the poll", said Verisk Maplecrodt analyst Charles Laurie in a note.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said it had so far released results for seven parliament seats out of 210.
