Crowley, whose district includes parts of the Bronx and Queens, has been in Congress since 1999 and had not seen opposition in a primary in 14 years.
When Burnett listed the ages of the septuagenarians now leading the Democratic party, Ocasio-Cortez said that it's time to elect "a new generation of people to Congress".
One of the many new female faces joining U.S. politics this year, Ms Ocasio-Cortez is a Bronx-born Latina, a community organiser and educator from a working-class background.
Ms Ocasio-Cortez will now face Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in the November mid-terms.
She never doubted her chances.

"I think what you see in the Democratic Party is that [Rep.] Maxine Waters [of California] and Bernie Sanders are becoming more and more the face of the Democratic Party", Short said.
He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run", to Ocasio-Cortez.
Ocasio-Cortez ran at Crowley from the left, and is unlikely to support real Congressional reform or to help drain the swamp, but she has an interesting personal story that underscores how the Queens machine operates - through corruption, cronyism and nepotism in the local courts.
And while Tuesday's primary attracted just 12 percent of registered Democrats, the statewide primary is likely to attract more voters from all corners of the state - and all wings of the Democratic Party.

"The biggest hurdle that our communities have is cynicism-saying it's a done deal, who cares, there's no point to voting", Ocasio-Cortez told volunteers in the lead-up to election day.
