As of today, the White House has promised that Melania is set to attend a closed-door event this evening for Gold Star families. But, in a twist worthy of Poe or Coleridge, when said reporters turned to the window to look for Melania Trump, she was nowhere to be found.
Despite plans to attend the reception Monday, a spokeswoman to the first lady said she will not be joining the president for the G7 summit in Quebec or the looming talks with North Korea next month in Singapore, CNN reported.
However, the first lady's absence made her appearance all the more newsworthy.
A Rolling Stone writer speculated on Twitter that First Lady Melania Trump could be the victim of spousal abuse by President Donald Trump, hence her recent public absence.

Mrs. Trump stayed in the hospital for five days and has kept out of public view since returning home May 19.
Shortly afterwards, she entered Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for what the White House described as a benign kidney procedure. Some people have even been posting humorous flyers in NY seeking information on the "missing" first lady. Greene's father was killed in action in Iraq in 2004, which means she is from a Gold Star family and would have been invited to the reception. Though it's her first appearance in weeks, the press was not asked to attend out of respect for the families' privacy.
Political strategist Stephanie Cutter, who was an adviser to former first lady Michelle Obama and served as her campaign chief of staff, interprets the intense interest in Trump as concern by Americans for a popular and well-liked first lady.
Jim Carrey went back to the drawing board over the weekend, and on Monday posted a new illustration of Melania Trump on his Twitter.
"I'm amazed Mrs Trump has been able to do it", she told AFP.
It's the second year the Trumps have opened the White House to Gold Star families. But over the past half century, it has become the expectation that people know the basic narrative of the first lady's activities.
