Dedrick Williams, 22, was pulled over Wednesday evening in Pompano Beach north of Miami and arrested on a warrant for first-degree murder, the Broward County Sheriff's Department said. Investigators had previously stated that the shooting was likely a botched robbery attempt.
The 20-year-old rapper was ambushed by two suspects as he left an upscale motor sports dealership Monday afternoon.
Charges against Williams include first-degree murder, a probation violation for theft of a vehicle, and driving without a valid license.
The man now being held as a suspect in the murder of XXXTentacion made appeared to make a coded reference to the shooting shortly after the rapper had been gunned down.
After the news of the rapper's death broke, the 20-year-old rapper's music rapidly climbed the charts.
In 2016, prosecutors charged him with aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, false imprisonment and witness tampering.
Williams was expected to appear Thursday in Broward County Court. "In deference to his family, friends, and loved ones and in light of further investigation, we ask that their privacy be respected at this time".
She wrote in subsequent posts this week that she was kicked out of the vigil for XXXTentacion, and that someone burned the items she had brought for the rapper to the memorial. According to TMZ, Williams was also charged with violating probation after a prior grand theft auto charge.
Three days after the violent murder of XXXTentacion, many are still reeling at the talented artist's death.
"I've seen him riding them 4-wheelers", Slappy said. He said he used violence so she would engage with him. The Broward Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to an email seeking clarification on the charges.
Meanwhile an elderly couple faced death threats following social media rumours falsely linking them to the rapper's death.
