The Warriors dispatched the Rockets on Monday (Tuesday morning, Manila time) with a fine second half display in Game 7 to advance. To add fuel to the fire, the Rockets also set an National Basketball Association record for missing 27-straight 3-pointers at one time too, which arguably was the deciding factor in the game.
The best-of-seven series between Cleveland and Golden State will begin Thursday night at Oracle Arena, as the Warriors will once again have home court advantage after finishing with a better regular season record.
Since Steve Kerr took over as head coach in 2014, the Warriors have lost 20 playoff games; 16 of those involved their opponents shooting better from behind the three-point line. Golden State deserves credit for fighting off Houston, and yet, it felt like this series came down to what could have been for the Rockets more than what did happen for the Warriors.
"These guys, you think you've got them or you think you are guarding them okay, and it's just, if you take a deep breath one time, it's a 3", D'Antoni said.
"I can not do that next series, and that's a big no-no", he said.
With the Conference Finals win, we get the fourth edition of the Warriors and Cavs in the NBA Finals.
"I mean, the bigger the stage, the bigger the player, and he's been doing it for us since we've been here", Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said.
In response to Kerr's comments, Thompson said the Warriors were not anxious because they were more than capable of making an 11-point lead vanish within minutes. The Warriors will win this series easily, despite the valiant effort "The King" is sure to put up. Perhaps as a result, Kerr plans to play his top four starters - Curry, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson - for at least 40 minutes each.
Jack Maloney: The Warriors could probably win this in four games without too much trouble considering the wide talent gap between these two teams. James Harden wasn't much better, missing 11 of his 13 threes (32 points, six rebounds, six assists in all) while Gordon missed 10 of 12.
After being down by 10 at halftime of Game 6, the Warriors trailed by 11 entering the third quarter on Monday night. "I feel like once he gets going, we start to run more stuff for him". Winning a championship is hard, so this is a testament to that. So it's extremely frustrating ... we had an opportunity tonight and last game without Chris. "I guess this is the last chapter for our team and this season".
There is going to have to be a lot of critical discussion around the organization on whether taking 40-50 three pointers, particularly in a game where you are making 15 percent of them, is a good idea.
